It’s a commonly recurring request: hiding a washing machine in the bathroom arises when there is no space for a laundry room in the house and the appliance must be kept out of sight for aesthetic reasons.

Which cabinets best do the job of camouflaging a washing machine?

Before diving into the more practical aspects, let’s start with a simple fact that is not always considered: not all washing machines are designed for built-in installation. This means that, firstly, free-standing washing machines are much bigger, and secondly, they are likely to create too much condensation if integrated into a closed cabinet. So before looking for a cabinet to hide your washing machine, check that your appliance is designed for built-in installation.

That being said, here is a list of bathroom furnishing solutions that easily accommodate a washing machine and keep it out of sight.

If you can use the full height of the room, you can opt for a tall cabinet that will hide your washing machine and can also be fitted with practical shelves and organizers for keeping all of your laundry essentials neatly organized.

Place your washing machine out of sight in a niche or recess

If the layout of the bathroom allows it, you can use existing niches or recesses to hide your laundry appliances and laundry room essentials. In this case, bathroom cabinets can also be built into a niche (make sure you measure the space correctly otherwise you may not be able to fit the cabinets or even open their doors). Sometimes the niche or recess is found in a bath anteroom, where you can keep everything that does not fit into the bathroom: again, everything is perfectly organized and hidden from view.

Purchase a stylish washing machine (and fit it inside a designer cabinet)

In conclusion, hiding the washing machine is often a necessity, but there’s one last option that should be considered: fitting the washing machine only partly inside a cabinet, especially if it is not designed for built-in installation. 

It’s a sort of hybrid solution: the cabinet surround separates and organizes the space heightwise, but there are no doors or other fixed closing systems. For a touch of country-chic style you can use curtain panels made of linen or other natural fabrics to keep everything out of sight.

We have discussed the subject of laundries a number of times on our blog, but one thing we haven’t done is to talk about the more technical aspects linked to size: that means the widths and depths required to plan a bathroom that incorporates an attractive, functional service area.

1. Washing machine: how much space does it occupy?

If laundry space is lacking in other rooms in the house, the washing machine can be fitted into the bathroom.

• Depth: excluding 33cm deep mini-washing machines (perhaps only convenient in a holiday home), the less voluminous models (4/5 kg) occupy a depth of approximately 45cm, whereas bigger ones (8/9 kg) take up to 64cm, including the door. According to how much space we have, we must bear these measurements in mind, as well as the outlet: if it is behind the machine, it requires further space (to give an idea, about 10cm); if it is on one side, the machine can be placed closer to the wall behind it. Another aspect not to be underestimated is the opening space for the door: to avoid problems of damp in the washer, we need to leave room for the door to be left ajar (also when the machine is concealed inside a cabinet).
• Width: 59.5 / 60cm are standard measurements for all washing machines.
• Height: all washing machines are 85cm in height. Bear this in mind if you want to make use of the wall above the machine.

2. On view or concealed in a cabinet?

As we have seen, the washing machine alone occupies space and concealing it in a cabinet will require some extra centimetres for the unit’s back and side panels and door. Where space is at a premium and every millimetre counts, we need to consider every minimum detail very carefully.

If you want to leave the machine on view, you can use the area above it by fitting a wall unit or integrating it into a slim cabinet that covers the sides and can be equipped as you wish inside.

3. Laundry baskets

When talking about laundry space, we cannot ignore the need for a basket or compartment in which to stash items waiting to be washed. There’s an infinite variety of baskets, including designer models, which can be on show and match the rest of the decor in colour or finish. However, if there’s room, everything can be concealed inside a tall unit or cabinet with a pull-out or tilting system.

In any case, this is an element you cannot be without in a small bathroom laundry.
There is no standard dimension: laundry baskets come in all sizes, just find the one most suitable for your needs.

4. Detergents and other products for washing and caring for your clothes

Deep drawers, shelves, designer baskets, open units: these are the solutions at our disposal for keeping all the cleaning agents we need in a laundry space. Whether we use a broad selection or just a carefully chosen few, it’s better to store them tidily so that they are easily to hand and can be replaced quickly after use.
Also here, the walls and every corner of your bathroom can be used, according to the space available.

5. Dryer, ironing board, drying rack, washtub

We mention them all together because they are the elements we would like to have in a home laundry, but which we often need to place elsewhere. This post concentrates on the possibility of creating a mini-laundry in the bathroom, taking for granted that there is no room for anything else.

It goes without saying that these useful accessories can only be located in your laundry, on view or concealed, according to your priorities and the availability of balconies or open spaces.

The washtub, once considered essential, can be a larger washbasin occasionally used to do hand washing. There are hybrid models that look like designer washbasins and hide a double depth to use when needed, for example!

There is more scope with bigger bathroom laundries, which can include deep drawers for detergents, shoe racks, cupboards with clothes hanger rods for drying shirts and jackets without creases (or keeping them until they are ironed), compartments with hooks for brooms, electric brooms and vacuum cleaners.

If your bathroom/laundry also has room for an ironing area, consider the space required to store the ironing board when not in use (can also be an open unit).

A tidy, functional laundry: six useful accessories for organising space

1. Laundry baskets: the most obvious accessory in a laundry, needed to keep the dirty washing out of sight.  If there’s room, more than one is a good idea, to keep white and coloured things separate.

   

2. Deep drawers for detergents: used to store detergents in use, or keep a stock, if the drawer is big enough (we could be ecological and keep the empty containers to fill with detergents on tap).

   

3. Internal partitions and pull-out accessories: when internal space is well organised it’s easier to keep in order towels, detergents, soap and other things needed for washing and ironing.

   

4. Clothes hanger rods: to place on the inside or outside of open or closed tall units (taking advantage of masonry niches, for example). Can also be used for drying or keeping tidy shirts, knitwear and jackets.

   

5. Concealed or pull-out shoe rack: perfect for storing shoes neatly.

   

6. Broom hooks: to avoid squashing broom bristles it’s a good idea to hang them on hooks or store them upside down.

   

Undoubtedly, the size of the room obviously conditions the project, but with the right accessories even a small space can become a functional bathroom/laundry room, as shown.
